Albert C. Smith

October 21, 1926 — March 31, 2013

Albert Charles Smith was born to Perry L. and Maude Tucker Smith on Oct. 21, 1926. Albert was born on a cattle ranch on Horse Creek between Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Smith family came to Roseburg, OR in 1928. Al went to school in the Roseburg area until his family moved to Yoncalla in 1939. He graduated from Yoncalla High School in 1944 and went directly to Montana State College with the Air Force cadet program. After Montana State he went to the University of Utah. When the war ended he volunteered to serve in the European Army of Occupation where he served in Germany.
Al returned to Yoncalla in 1946 and went to U of O and Oregon College of Education. Al was married in 1948 to Wanda Long and they had 2 sons: Albert C. Jr. and Donald O. Smith. In 1956 he left Oregon State Highway Department and went into the building products management training program for U.S. Plywood where he worked for the next 30 years. Al retired in 1985 as General Manager of Western Manufacturing for Champion International who had merged with U.S. Plywood. He enjoyed his travels and he and his wife traveled extensively both abroad and in the U.S. He especially enjoyed following the trails of American History.
Al leaves his wife Wanda and sons Albert C. Jr. (Chuck) and his wife Betsy of Medford, son Donald and his family Brandy, Taylor and Brandon of Grants Pass, a grandson, Jason Smith of Medford and granddaughter, Kristina Marie Smith and her mother Meridth Smith of Roseburg. Also niece and nephews Kelly and Kevin Smith and Kathy Colunga
A Celebration of Life will be Sunday, April 7, 2013 at 3 pm at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. No flowers please. Donations can be made to the American Heart Association. Please visit Al's web site at www.wilsonschapeloftherosesfh.com to sign the online guest book and leave a condolence for the family. Wilson's Chapel of the Roses is in charge of the arrangements.
