Anna May passed away on Monday, September 9, 2013 at Hospice House in Bend, Oregon. She was born in Roseburg, Oregon on August 16, 1915 and was the second child of Marie and Ernest Unrath, who owned and operated Roseburg Dairy and Soda Works which later became the Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Anna May lived in Roseburg until 1933, when she left to attend Willamette University in Salem. She graduated from Willamette with a bachelor's degree in physical education and health. She was married on June 18, 1939 to Harold Hoyt, whom she had met at Willamette, and they were married for sixty-two years.
Anna May was vivacious, beautiful and kind. She brought energy and optimism to everything that she did. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who supported her family in every way.
Anna May was a well liked and well respected teacher in both high school and middle school. Her career took her from Dallas to Bend, Roseburg and finally Corvallis, where she coached middle school girls' soccer teams and had many successful seasons.
Anna May also participated in community service organizations including the Roseburg Women's club, the American Association of University Women, Camp Fire Girls, Delta Kappa Gamma and P.E.O.. Anna May received the Luther Halsey Gulick Award for Public Service for her work in Roseburg following World War II and for helping to organize the construction of Camp Tyee.
Anna May was an accomplished pianist who could play popular songs by ear. She was a lifelong member of Roseburg's First United Methodist Church. Anna May resided for the past decade in Aspin Ridge Retirement Center in Bend where she made many friends among the residents and staff.
Anna May was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Hoyt and her brother, William Unrath. She is survived by her daughter, Kristin Carrico and son-in-law, Bob; her grandchildren: Stanley and Carolyn Carrico and her nieces: Mary-Elise Diedrich and Sabra Wood.
A private family graveside service has been held.
