Beatrice A. Crain

Beatrice Adele Crain, 95, passed away quietly on Thursday morning, May 31, 2018.  She was born in Independence, Iowa on October 14, 1922, to Fannie and Scottie Frye.  She graduated from Independence High School in 1940 and the State University of Iowa in 1944 with a Bachelor’s Degree in education. Following college, she worked for the American Beauty Macaroni Company in Denver.  In 1948, while teaching 7th grade in Aurora, Colorado, she met Roy E. Crain. Beatrice and Roy were married on June 11, 1949 in Independence, Iowa. They moved to Roseburg, Oregon, where Roy continued his career in education as principal of Benson Elementary and later at Riverside Elementary.  Beatrice worked at Barcus Motors, then was later involved in establishing Dougco Schools Federal Credit Union, first out of their home on Dogwood Street, then at a location on Walnut Street as the business grew. She also held jobs at Umpqua Community College bookstore, Production Credit Association, and until her retirement at age 71, as a clerk for the Douglas County Court system.
Over the years, she followed Roseburg High School sports, Lumberjills fast-pitch women’s softball, American Legion baseball, University of Oregon basketball and football, and the Portland Trailblazers.  From her Midwest upbringing, she enjoyed playing card games of all kinds with friends and family.
Beatrice was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy and granddaughter Rachel in 1992, her brother Norman Scott Frye Jr., and brother-in-law Glen Rogers.  She is survived by her sister, Ardis Rogers of Percival, Iowa, sister-in-law Effie Frye of Waterloo, Iowa, son Larry Crain of Medford, Oregon, and daughter Kym Dickenson and son-in-law Steve, of Roseburg Oregon. She is also survived by two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
