Benjamin David Du Bois, Jr. "Dave" passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2016, in Roseburg, Oregon. Dave was born in Los Angeles, California, on September 4, 1933, to Benjamin and Elsie Du Bois.
Dave served in the United States Marine Corp, 1st Marine Division, 1st Tank Battalion from July of 1952, until September of 1955. He was sent to the Korean War as a tank commander, and was awarded a purple heart during the Chosin Reservoir Campaign. Upon returning home, Dave was transferred to the U.S. Marine Corp Reserve until his discharge in 1960.
During his working career, Dave wore many hats. He was a motorcycle policeman for the Los Angeles Police Department, chief security officer for the Wrigley family on Santa Catalina Island, California, head of maintenance at Los Angeles International Airport, an employee of the U.S. Forest Service (North Umpqua District), and owner of several businesses.
Dave was proud of the success he had as an American Hot Rod Association driver. In 1966, he set two world records driving a Top Fuel Dragster. His first record came at the Winter National Championships at Irwindale Raceway on February 11th. On July 30th at the AHRA World Championships, at Lions Drag Strip, he set his second world record. He was known as "Mr. Pepsi".
Dave was also involved in the Arabian Horse Association, and showed his stallion, Catalina Pharaz, in many breed shows. After moving to Roseburg, Dave's interests became more leisurely. In between hiking the Rogue River, fishing, and camping, he loved working around his farm and enjoyed his horses.
Dave is survived by his daughter, Brigette Du Bois; and his long-time companion, Joellen "Jody" Barber. Dave was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters, Beverly Nash and Shirley Merbach; and his faithful dog, Molly.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January 9, 2017, at 2:00 p.m. at the Roseburg National Cemetery (inside the V.A. complex). Memorial donations may be made to the Boys & Girls Club of the Umpqua Valley.
