Bette L. Bigler of Roseburg, Oregon passed away on April 27, 2013 after suffering a stroke. She was born in Beaver City, Nebraska on February 17, 1927 to Roland and Ardis (Shafer) Edie. The family moved to Bayard, Nebraska in 1942 and Bette graduated from Bayard High School in 1944.
Bette attended college in Denver for one year and on June 28, 1945 married Larry Bigler in Mountain Home, Idaho while he was on leave from the Navy. She lived in Denver while Larry was overseas during World War II. After the war they moved back to Bayard and in 1948 moved to Roseburg, Oregon when Larry accepted a job with Douglas Electric Cooperative.
While her kids were growing up she was very involved in their activities, especially Boy Scouts and Camp Fire Girls. In 1966 she went to work for the Camp Fire Girls and a few years later became the Executive Director of the Umpqua Council of Camp Fire Girls. One of her proudest achievements was making Camp Tyee a thriving summer camp and she was instrumental in getting a swimming pool built at the camp. In 1974 she started a new career when she began working for the Roseburg School District. In 1976 she became the secretary at Fullerton IV Elementary School, where she remained until her retirement in 1991.
During her summer vacations Bette worked as a volunteer for The Friendly Kitchen. After she retired she began volunteering at The Next To New Shop and then at the Roseburg Veterans Hospital. At the time of her death she was still volunteering at The Friendly Kitchen every Friday. She and her friend Irene Hanna attended most of Roseburg High School's sporting events and she enjoyed going to the Booster Club luncheon every Friday. She and Irene also attended as many of the Doc Stewart's American Legion Baseball games as they could.
For the past 42 years Bette's proudest and most fulfilling role was that of grandma. She was an integral part of her grandkids lives when they were growing up and loved it when the next generation came along and there were more kids to watch grow up.
Bette was preceded in death by her husband Larry and by her parents. She is survived by her daughters Marsha Bigler and Brenda Kingry (Larry) and sons Pat Bigler (Sandie) and Mike Bigler (Nancy); her grandchildren Jamie Upchurch (Wayne), Phil Bigler (Cari), Dave Bigler (Cilicia), Rebecca Holland (Dan), and Rob Bigler (Lindsay). She is also survived by 13 great grandchildren: Will, Jack, Charlie, Max, Natalie, Michaela, Benjamin, Jonathan, Kolby, Jesse, Brody, Morgan, and Kylee. She is also survived by her two sisters Judy Meeuwsen and Tari Querin.
