Calvin C Peterson

October 4, 1925 — February 27, 2017

Calvin Peterson, 91 years old of Roseburg, Oregon passed away on February 27, 2017. The son of Alfred and Ruby Peterson was born in Eugene, Oregon. In 1955 he married the love of his life, Mollye Peterson and they were happily married for 61 years.
Calvin served in the Army during World War II as part of the 89th Division, 355th Inf. 1st BN. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Battle of Rhineland- Central Europe, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation and Good Conduct Medal. His unit was involved with the discovery and liberation of the Concentration Camp at Ohrdruf.
Calvin graduated from Eugene High School and received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree from the Oregon College of Education. He taught at Melrose Elementary School, was vice-principal at Joseph Lane Junior High, Principal at Green Elementary and Fullerton IV Elementary. He was a past President of the Oregon Elementary Principal's association. When he retired in 1984, the Calvin C. Peterson Arboretum located at Fullerton IV was dedicated on his behalf. The arboretum contains the state trees of the United States.
Calvin enjoyed camping, US and International travel, spending time with family, and family history.
He was involved with a number of civic organizations over the years serving as a Scoutmaster, Master Gardener and as a member of the Rotary Club of Roseburg. He was also a long time Oregon Duck fan.
He is survived by his wife Mollye Peterson, Sister Lucille McMillian, Children Byron, Eugenia Schulz, Greg, Glenn, Mark and their spouses along with six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His gentleness and encouragement to all will be missed.
A family celebration of life is being planned for later this year.
