CECIL HOWARD JONES 97 of Roseburg, Oregon passed to his rest on the Sabbath, his favorite day, November 7, 2009. He was born January 29, 1912 in Avinger, Texas to Oscar V. and Minnie L. (Chastain) Jones. The family moved from Avinger, Texas to La Sierra, California (now Riverside, California) in 1923, and he lived there 81 years. Cecil graduated in 1931 from La Sierra Academy. He then attended Southern California Junior College in La Sierra, now known as La Sierra University. On November 1, 1934 in Los Angeles, California he married Carol R. Lininger and they were married for 64 years until she preceded him in death on June 21, 1999. Cecil worked with his father making brooms until his father died. Cecil then took over the business and became self employed. He had the broom factory for 54 years and never really quit. He'd keep finding his way back into the broom factory. Cecil played 3rd base in the La Sierra Heights Baseball League. He also enjoyed traveling to Yosemite, the Redwoods, Zion, Bryce and Yellowstone National Parks and Monuments. Cecil was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in La Sierra, California for 81 years and Roseburg, Oregon for the past 5 years. He became Head Deacon in 1947 and was a deacon for 57 years. In August of 2004 Cecil moved from La Sierra, California to Roseburg, Oregon to be with his daughter. Survivors include his daughters Barbara Jean Gober and her husband Dan of Roseburg, Oregon and Janis Lee Inman and her husband Mike of Perris, California; 8 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren; 7 nieces, 6 nephews; 2 cousins and special friends Mary Groome-Frick and Galeta Brewer. Graveside services will be held Tuesday November 17, 2009 at 10:30 am in the Olivewood Memorial Park in Riverside, California. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 2:00 pm at the Roseburg Seventh-day Adventist Church. Pastor Lyle Arakaki will officiate.
