Born in 1922, in Grants Pass, Oregon, Del was one of nine children of William and Edith Chastain. After he lived through the horrors of WWII, serving as Army Corporal in the 121st Station Hospital; he completed his tour of duty in England and brought back a beautiful wife and stories of the bravery of the men with whom he served, as well as medals for Victory, Good Conduct, and European African Middle Eastern Service. He retired after 22 years as building manager of the Roseburg Federal Building in 1982 and served on the board of directors for the Federal Employees Credit Union.
Del spent the last half century living in Roseburg, faithfully serving in the same church, hunting and fishing the same mountains, and watering the same plants. At 88 years old, he was still known for his beautifully tended garden, which at the time of his passing was radiant.
