Obituary for Don "Whitey" V. Harris
Don V. Harris "Whitey" was born in Wilbur, Washington April 30, 1926 to Roy H. Harris and Ethel Marie Harris. He moved to Oregon in 1936 and went to school in Phoenix, and Jacksonville, OR. He moved to Portland, OR and worked in the ship yards until the end of WWII. He moved to Roseburg in June of 1949 and was a core layer at Umpqua Plywood till August of 1959 when he went to work at the VA Hospital. He won exclusive recognition for the hospital and was president of the union for 16 years. He got married in 1950 and had one daughter Linda Ann Boyles who presented him five grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He has two sons; Jason Sands who has two children, Brandon and Megan, and Martin Sands, unmarried and no children. Whitey loved the Roseburg area, hiking, biking, camping, commercial fishing on weekends and vacations at Winchester Bay. He was an honest man and paid his bills. He had an older sister who preceded him in death, she had four children, Ben Caufman and wife Peg, and son Mike and Jan Antone who had two children Ken and Phyllis.
