Dorothy Bernice Quimby, age 96, of Roseburg, Oregon passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017. She was born in Kent, Washington on July 19, 1921 to parents William and Margaret (Hatfield) Earnshaw.
At age 3 months, with her parents, maternal Grandparents, and her older sister Violet they travelled by covered wagon to Star, Oregon, settling in Row River (east of Cottage Grove). After their home burned, they moved downriver to Culp Creek. At age 4, Dorothy, her 2 brothers and 2 sisters sat on the bank of Culp Creek and watched the filming of a silent comedy film, The General, starring Buster Keaton, where a train driven across a bridge which her Dad had helped build crashed in the river. She attended grade school at Wildwood School and graduated from Cottage Grove High School in 1941. Raised during the Great Depression, Dorothy worked in the bean fields and picked fruit to make money.
Dorothy married Bill Quimby from Gridley, CA in 1941. They made their home in Longview, WA during the war and later moved back to Roseburg where Bill worked in the logging industry and Dorothy worked at Douglas Community and Mercy Hospitals for 15 years. She was later a Hospice volunteer for 10 years. She was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary, loved to travel with the tour buses, work outside and grow flowers. In her later years, she enjoyed travelling to watch her great-grandson Cody participate in sporting and 4-H events.
Dorothy was proceeded in death by her parents, husband of 48 years, Bill in 1987, grandson, Travis in 1972, two sisters and one brother.
She leaves behind one brother, Arnold; three sons: Douglas & Garnet of Roland, AR, Edward & Juanita of Yuma, AZ and William & Rose of Roseburg, OR; seven grandchildren: Michelle, Darrin, Deanna, Robin, Heidi, Jesse and Christina; as well as a large extended family and many special friends.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to Randy and Terri Weaver and Arlene Drury for the love and support they provided to Dorothy.
Graveside services will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, October 28th, 2017 at Wimberly Family Cemetery in Glide, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Mercy Foundation, Hospice Fund, 2700 NW Stewart Parkway, Roseburg, OR 97471. Please visit
