His education began in a one room school house at Waseca District # 5. After graduating from Waseca High School in 1965, he attended Mankato State. In 1966, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed at Camp LeJeune in NC. Doug and Kathy were married in 1967 in Vesta, MN. After serving in the Marines, Doug went to school at Michigan Technological University, getting an Associate Degree in Forestry. In 1975, he started working for the United States Forest Service at the Yaak Ranger district near Troy, MT. A service-oriented person, Doug was an assistant scoutmaster for the Boy Scout troop in Troy, served in the National Guard, and was a volunteer crewman for the Troy ambulance service. In 1979, his family moved to Tiller, OR, where he worked for the Tiller Ranger District as a civil engineer. His diabetes forced retirement at an early age. Doug enjoyed traveling in his RVs with his family whenever and where ever possible. Douglas County Shrine Club was a fun part of his life.
Kathy and the family would like to say a very special thank you to his wonderful caregivers who helped carry out all Doug's needs in unconditional, loving ways: Melissa Gerharter, who was joined by her young daughter Izzy on her daily visits, and Courtney Faulkner, who provided Doug with physical therapy. A very big thank you is expressed to his Senior Companion for the past 6 years, Jay Lawrence. The many Eucharistic Ministers from Faith Lutheran were very much appreciated for the many times they visited, bringing prayers and communion to Doug.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, July 30 at Faith Lutheran Church, 820 W. Kenwood, Roseburg with Pastor Jane Baker presiding.
