Elizabeth "Betty" Fretwell

Our beloved sister, aunt and friend Betty Fretwell passed away May 13, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. Her niece Christi Jansen was at her side.

Betty was born in Roseburg on July 17, 1923 to Hugh and Cecil Fretwell. She attended Roseburg schools, graduating from Roseburg High in 1941. She went to work for the U. S. Weather Bureau until1945 when she joined the U. S. Army Air Corps as soon as they accepted women into the military. She was honorably discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant. She returned to Roseburg and the Weather Bureau before transferring to Winnemucca, NV, Medford OR, and Kahului, Hawaii. When she returned stateside she worked as a Supervisor for the Federal Aviation Agency at the Flight Data Control Centers in Palmdale, CA and Auburn, WA. When she retired in 1988 after 41 years of government service she returned to Roseburg. Betty became a Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver. She was also a quilter. She was a devout Christian in the true sense of the word and a long time member of St. George's Episcopal Church where she served for many years as a Lay Eucharist Minister. She devoted her life to the service of God, her family, her community and her church. All who knew her loved Betty. She will be sorely missed.

Betty was preceded in death by siblings Nola Fretwell Perata, Jim Fretwell and Sue Fretwell Kleiner and nephews Ted Fretwell, John Orpin, Jim Orpin, Bob Kleiner and niece Sue Lyn Fretwell Tybo. She is survived by siblings Ethel Fretwell Orpin of Medford OR, Hugh Fretwell (Pat) of Roseburg, Hal Fretwell of King City, OR and Katherine Fretwell Haskins of Paradise CA. as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and great grandnieces and nephews.

A Memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 7th at 11:00 A. M. at St. George's Episcopal Church at 1024 S.E. Cass Avenue in Roseburg.
