ERNEST HOLLAND, 93, of Roseburg passed away May 3, 2015 after a two year battle with thyroid cancer. He was born September 7, 1921 in Doniphan, Missouri to Laura (Bollenbacher) and James T. Holland.
Ernie was a WWII veteran in the US Navy from August 1942 to October 1945 stationed at the US Naval Receiving Station in Miami. He served on the USS PC566 (patrol cruiser) on the Atlantic. Their duty was to protect ships carrying cargo supplies/personnel from German submarines.
In 1943, Ernie married Betty Jean Thurmond of Missouri on September 27th. They celebrated their 71st anniversary on September 27, 2014. The family moved to Oregon in 1948. Ernie was employed by Martin Box in Oakland and Champion International (US Plywood) in Roseburg, where he retired in 1986. After retirement, he enjoyed gardening and playing cards and dominoes with family and friends. Ernie was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife Betty; five daughters: Myra Hunt (Dennis), Waldport; Dianna McCoy (Regan), West Linn; Judy Ouellette (Mike); Sharon Liesinger (Vern); and Carol Mendenhall (Jerry), all of Roseburg; three sons: Jerry (Lee), Albany; Rick (Linda), Vero Beach, Florida; and Mike (Pam), Roseburg; 13 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters: Beulah Brewer, Indiana and Gladys Smithson, Missouri; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death was a 2 year old son, 3 brothers and 2 sisters. The family would like to thank Amedisys Hospice and the Roseburg VA Hospice Care Center for their loving care to our husband and father. Arrangements entrusted to Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Private family services will be held at the Roseburg VA Cemetery.
