Evelyn B. Wise

December 4, 1920 — March 14, 2013

Evelyn B. Wise passed away March 14, 2013, at her home in Sutherlin, Oregon, at the age of 92. She was born on December 4, 1920, at Minam, Oregon, to parents Wayman and Laura "Millie" Larkin. Evelyn was the oldest of four siblings.
After the two oldest daughters were born, the Larkins moved to Bridge Island in the Snake River near Nyssa, Oregon, and farmed the land until about 1932, when the family moved back to Wallowa County, Oregon.
Evelyn caught the eye of nearby Smith Mountain resident Millard Wise, who asked her to teach him to play the guitar as an excuse to court her. Millard never did master the guitar however. The couple married on September 28, 1940, and struggled to make a living during the first few years of marriage by working in the logging industry, and then in various jobs in the LaGrande, Oregon, area. In 1946, just after their last child was born, the family moved to Athena, Oregon, and then to Milton-Freewater, Oregon, in 1949, where they raised their family and worked until retirement. The couple moved to southern Oregon near Rice Hill in 1976 and then to their final residence in Sutherlin in 1989.
Evelyn's greatest joy was being part of the worldwide fellowship established by Jesus during His ministry, which is still on the earth today, and follows the New Testament teachings of the church meeting in homes. Evelyn looked forward to eternal life with her Saviour.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Millard Wise; her son, Larry Wise; her parents, Wayman and Millie Larkin; her sister, Lena Wise; and her grandson, Rusty Wise.
She is survived by her daughters, Betty Scott of Sutherlin, Oregon, and Carol West and husband Wally of Redway, California; her sisters, Barbara Raines of Wallowa, Oregon, and Bethel Stubblefield and husband Omar of Wallowa, Oregon; her brother, Jack Larkin of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren Allen Scott, Loren Scott, Brian Scott, Carrie Powell, Gary Wise, and Helen Baker; eight great-grandchildren; several great-great grandchildren; and many friends.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the Sutherlin Chapel of The Roses, with Brandon Forsyth and Zach Zimmerli officiating. Graveside services will follow in Valley View Cemetery near Sutherlin. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 22, at the Sutherlin Chapel of The Roses.
