George M. Johnson, age 89, died on December 19, 2017 surrounded by family. George was born in San Francisco, CA on March 25, 1928. His parents, Hector and Ruby (Golfner) Johnson preceded him in death. George was raised in foster homes from the age of 7-1/2 years old. He had two sisters, who have also preceded him in death, Gloria Raymond and Lila Wulff both of California. George married Bernice (Bunny) Ikola in 1999 and became a wonderful step-father to her four adult children: Wayne and wife Diana, of Portland; Rob and wife Tammy, of Roseburg; Kathy Ikola of Portland; and Tim and wife Cyndee, of Myrtle Creek. He was also a loving and generous Grandpa to eight grandchildren and Great-grandpa also to 8 great-grandchildren. George had numerous friends of many years. He was best known for telling jokes, wherever he was! George served in the US Army for four years, then in the reserves for 23 years. He had various jobs but ended up employed by AT&T for 33 years from which he officially retired at the age of 59. George had lived in Grants Pass, OR then moved to Roseburg where he was an active member of the community. He was involved with Hillah Shriners, Blue Lodge and Patrol. He would dress up as a Keystone Cop and ride his 1932 Ford Roadster in parades. The children loved it. He did a lot of traveling; he enjoyed bowling and was on a bowling team for over 20 years. George loved people and would always strike up a conversation with anyone wherever he was. Always had a high-five for any kid he passed by. He was always available whenever needed to help family or friends. He always stayed busy, having a project of some sort going. He made beautiful stained glass pieces. When Bunny and George married, George also became "dad" to Bunny's dog, Odie who quickly became best friends. After Odie passed, they got Toes as a puppy from Tim. Toes was always by George's side. George bought a plaque for Bunny that stated "next to the dog, I love you best" - his great sense of humor was with him to the very end. And also his hospitality, telling people who came to see him his last week at the hospital "thank you for coming." A memorial service will be held in George's honor on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 1:00 pm at Westside Christian Church, 2712 W. Harvard, Roseburg where George as attended since 2003. His service will be officiated by Pastor Rick McMichael who was also a close friend, with the Shriner's participating. Come share a story or two about George. He was a special person who loved to make people smile and he will be greatly missed by many.
