Harold Bock (age 98) passed away peacefully at his home in Myrtle Creek, Oregon on August 12, 2013. Harold was born to John and Bertha (Young) Bock on August 29,1914 in Circleville, Ohio. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to northern Indiana, and eventually settled in Nappanee. Harold was an avid reader and loved music. As a youth, he took the train to Chicago to study classical guitar. He sang in several church choirs including Lutheran, Mennonite, and Church of the Brethren, and he retained his fine voice until the final few years of his life
Harold served his country during WWII at Civilian Public Service camp #21 near Cascade Locks, Oregon. The CPS camps were co-sponsored by churches and the Federal government as an alternative public service for those opposed to war. The work at CPS #21 was under the supervision of the US Forest Service, and included wildfire suppression and the maintenance of roads and campgrounds in the Columbia Gorge. The camp communities were diverse and vibrant, and the deep friendships forged at the camp lasted throughout his life.
While at CPS, he met and married Louise Anderson. After the war, Harold and Louise lived for a time at Macedonia Cooperative Community in Clarkesville, Georgia. From there, the growing family moved to North Carolina where Harold studied at the University of North Carolina. He completed his undergraduate studies at Goshen College in Indiana, became a teacher, and returned to Oregon to teach high school social studies -- first at Albany Union High School, then at Bend Senior High School and Marshfield High School in Coos Bay. He continued his education, earning a Master's degree and a PhD at the University of Oregon. After completing his PhD, Harold and Louise settled in Myrtle Creek in 1974, where he taught at South Umpqua High School.
Harold and Louise loved working in their large garden. In addition to flowers and vegetables, they grew grapes, Marion berries, and fruit trees, and enjoyed preserving the fruits of their labor. After retirement, Harold and Louise traveled extensively, visiting friends throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Europe, Kuwait, and Peru.
Harold's passions for peace and social justice, his inspired teaching, his guidance and affection for his students, and his warmth, humor and joy in living life to the fullest won him many, many life-long friends. His presence in our lives will be missed.
A service will be held on September 20 at 1:00 p.m. at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses in Roseburg, OR.
