Herbert A Johnson

April 21, 1921 — February 26, 2018

Herbert Alden Johnson passed from this life to eternal life with Jesus on the morning of February 26, 2018.

Herb was born April 21, 1921, in the ranchlands surrounding the community of Ree Heights, South Dakota, to Henry Eddie Johnson and Alice (Setbacken) Johnson. He was the fourth child of a ten sibling family. At the age of four, his father moved the family to a ranch outside of Lake Preston, South Dakota. When Herb was not in school, or working on the ranch, he spent his spare time hunting, fishing, and running trap lines. In 1938, Herb graduated from Lake Preston High School, and rode the freight trains with a couple of high school buddies to Ellensburg, WA, where they worked picking apples. He returned to the family farm the following year riding the train as a paid passenger with lots of money in his pocket.

Herb joined the Navy in December, 1941, and served aboard a mine sweeper in the South Pacific until 1946. He received many battle stars on his ribbons. In 1947, Herb met the love of his life, Mary (Marnie) Adelman, and they were married in 1948. In 1949, their son, Gregory, was born, and in 1955, their daughter (Barbara) was born.

Herb and Marnie opened a hardware store in Oakland, CA, which they operated for several years. In 1965, the family moved to Roseburg where Herb operated a construction company. Herb was “Life Member” of the VFW and DAV. He was active in the Umpqua Lions, Roseburg Elks, and St. Joseph Catholic Church.

The outdoor life was a big part of Herb’s life. He loved fishing, hunting, camping, rock-hounding, and logging on the family’s Ranchero LaVista property. He and Marnie traveled all over the country in their RV, especially enjoying the Johnson Family Reunions, picking apples in Washington, and wintering in Arizona. He never passed up a chance to throw horse shoes with friends. Herb’s Christian faith was extremely important to him; attending weekly Bible studies, and going to Mass every Sunday were anchors to his faith.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, seven siblings, and his wife of 68 years. He is survived by children Gregory Johnson (Carol) and Barbara Johnson Tuma (Joseph); five grandchildren, Bryan, Matthew, Michelle, Joseph, Nathaniel; 15 great-grandchildren; and two siblings, Lorraine and Leonard.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 800 W. Stanton St., on Friday April 20, 2018 at 12:10 p.m., followed by a reception at St Joseph Church Gym, and then a military internment ceremony at the National Veterans Cemetary in Roseburg at 3:00 p.m. In honor of Herb, the family asks that people make donations to the Umpqua Lions (PO Box 57, Roseburg, OR 97470) for purchasing eye glasses for needy children.
