HERTA TUCKER 88, of Roseburg, Oregon passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at her home. She was born April 24, 1923 in Vienna, Austria to Josef and Christine (Hoffmann) Schager. Herta was proud to have been born in the same hospital as her maternal grandmother Christine (Eltmann) Hoffmann. She spent her childhood in the town of Tulln, 28 miles from Vienna. Herta enjoyed spending as much time as possible in Vienna with her grandmother Christine, who owned and operated a sidewalk greenhouse flower business. She was especially close to her father and shared with him his love of mushroom hunting in the woods around their home. Other fond memories included riding the bicycle her US Army Private fianc (James DeWitt Tucker) bought for her. On December 31, 1947 she left it behind to marry "JD" in a hand sewn dress made from a parachute and immediately headed toward her new life aboard The Huddleston, a ship bound for America. After settling in Roseburg, Oregon, Herta and JD adopted 2 children. Herta loved spending time with her daughter Teresa. She was proud to be a charter member of Vine Street Baptist Church. Herta loved her church family, her dolls, angels and especially her flowers. Survivors include her son Steve Tucker (Sandra); brother Erich Schager (Traude) of Tulln, Austria; granddaughter Erin (David) and three great grandchildren Taylor, Ava and Trenton. Herta was preceded in death by her husband JD Tucker, daughter Teresa Tucker and her brother Herbert Schager. A celebration of Herta's life will be held Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Vine Street Baptist Church. Private interment will be within the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in Herta's memory to the charity of your choice.
