Howard W Johnstone

February 18, 1928 — October 29, 2018

Howard W. Johnstone died October 29, 2018, at home in Roseburg, OR. He was born February 18, 1928, in Seattle, Washington, to Frank and Hazel Johnstone. He graduated from Bothell High School, where he was very active in sports, in 1946.

Sergeant First Class Howard served in the US Army Security Agency from 1948-1952 in Japan and Korea, during the Korean War. He graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Forest Engineering in 1955.

He worked for Roseburg Lumber as a Surveyor and Logging Engineer from May 20, 1959, until retiring from Roseburg Forest Products May 22, 1990. He was a Life Member of the Professional Land Surveyors of Oregon and served as the Umpqua Chapter chair, President of the Edelweiss Ski Club and Chairman of the Green Sanitary District Board for 10 years.

Howard enjoyed travelling the world with his beloved wife Mary, to whom he was married 66 years. Once an avid skier, hiker and fisherman, his travels were cut short as Parkinsons Disease and other health issues made it harder for him to travel.

He is survived by his wife Mary Johnstone; daughters, Becky and Carol Johnstone; granddaughter, Mariah Halkyard Krevanko and her children; his sister, Barbara Johnstone Usitallo; and many nieces and nephews.
