Jack Barker Josse passed away peacefully, with his wife Carol at his side, on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at Chantel's Loving Touch Memory Care Center, in Sutherlin, Oregon. He was born July 27, 1920 in Seattle, Washington to Louis W. Josse and Harriet Barker Josse.
Jack Josse attended the University of Oregon in Eugene. He was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa. After his junior year he served in the Navy during WW2, in North Africa. He also served in the Korean War.
Jack Josse's family owned Josse Furniture in Roseburg, Oregon. He worked the family business for many years then moved to northern California where he worked for Atlantic Richfield Co. while finishing his degree in teaching at a college in Santa Rosa California. He moved his family to Reno, Nevada in 1960 where he taught school at Jessie Beck Elementary. He divorced in 1962 and relocated back to Roseburg, Oregon.
He has been married to Carol Kerr Josse and over 40 years residing in Roseburg. He worked alone as a commercial salmon fisherman on his own boat, The Polaris, out of Winchester Bay, Oregon, for about 10 years. He belonged to the Winchester Bay Grange. He was known "Captain Jack" to his fisherman friends there.
When he was not fishing, he also sold his homemade incense, traveling to the Saturday Market circuit throughout Oregon for many years. Later, he developed an online ordering website, called Scentsationalscents.com. He sold essentials oils and incense successfully online from 1995 through 2000.
He is survived by his wife Carol Kerr Josse of Roseburg. Previously, Jack was married to Jean S. Kean of Thousand Oaks, CA. They had three children. The oldest son, Peter K. Josse of Atascadero, CA and a granddaughter Jacqueline Berry, and a great granddaughter Patricia Berry.
Son, Kim F. Josse, of Johnson City, N.Y. and grandchild, David Josse and grandchildren, Leo and Ezra and granddaughter, Danielle Josse Witazek, and great grandchildren, Brody, Cole, Emma and Lily.
And daughter, Christine Josse Paterson of Thousand Oaks, CA, a granddaughter, Andrea Jean Smith and great granddaughter, Charlotte and another granddaughter, Sarah Kathryn Paterson. He is survived by a cousin John Barker, of Washington.
The family is grateful for the loving care Jack received from Tender Home Care Services and at Chantel's Loving Touch Memory Care, Sutherlin, Oregon. He will be placed with in the grounds of Roseburg Memorial Gardens. No services are scheduled at this time.
