JACK B McCLURE MD, 91, of Winchester, Oregon passed away June 2, 2014 in a local care facility. He was born September 1, 1922 in Gilman, Colorado to Frank and Bethel (Webb) McClure. Jack went to Miami High School in Miami, Arizona, attended Arizona State in Tempe, Arizona and Stanford University. He served as an enlisted man for three years during the Second World War. Following discharge, he attended the University of Chicago School of Medicine, graduating in 1950 with the degree of Doctor of Medicine. After four years of surgical residency at the University of Kansas Medical Center and his Thoracic Surgery Residency at the Letterman Army Hospital in San Francisco, California he moved to Myrtle Creek, Oregon. He practiced as a surgeon in Myrtle Creek until 1956 when he was called to active duty with the Army Medical Corps. During his military career, his assignments included tours of duty in Germany, Korea and South Vietnam. During his period of service in Vietnam on two occasions he was decorated each time because of his successful removal of an explosive missile from the body of an American service man. Following his return to the States he served at Brooke Army Medical Center and at the United States Army Academy of the Health Sciences. He was a Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of Texas Medical School of San Antonio and a Professor of Health Sciences at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. At the time of his retirement from the Army in 1974, as Colonel, his military decorations included the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Soldiers Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal and numerous other foreign and domestic decorations. Following his military retirement he was for several years the Chief of Surgery at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Roseburg, Oregon. He then accepted a position with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and for five years traveled across the country evaluating hospitals for their physical capabilities, their medical staff and the quality of the care they delivered. Jack was a member of FACS, the Roseburg Country Club, Elks and Masonic Lodge. He loved reading, playing golf and traveling. Since his retirement from this position, he has written three novels, one of which is at present under consideration for publication. Survivors include his wife of 50 years Patricia Nolan McClure of Winchester; son Douglas McClure and his wife Salud Amado Crespo of Seville, Spain; Step-grandson Miguel Rubio-Amado and step-granddaughter Maria Rubio-Amado; brother Donald McClure and his wife Pauline; nieces Donna Grimsley and her husband Robbie, Dorothy Dudzic and Diane Osborn and her husband Brent; nephew Frank McClure and his wife Karen. Jack was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Bethel McClure. Dr. McClure will be "planted" in Arlington National Cemetery next to John F. Kennedy with full military honors. Floral tributes are not desired since the President and the Army Chief of Staff are expected to handle such mundane matters. A memorial celebration of life will be held Tuesday, June 17, 2014 at 3:00 pm at St. George's Episcopal Church with a reception to follow. The Reverend Joanne Bennett will officiate.
