James Ray Estabrook
Quietly passed away on Friday, June 20, 2014 at the age of 81. He was born August 17, 1932 in Roseburg, OR, the son of the late Clyde Estabrook and Helen Dumont. Jimmy lived in Douglas County his entire life, spending much of his growing up years on Little River in Glide where his love of the outdoors began; riding horses, hunting and fishing, activities that lasted his lifetime. In his early teen years, he guided the US Forest Service horseback on the Umpqua Trail, scouting what is now known as the North Umpqua Highway. He graduated from Glide High School in 1950 and went to work ranching and in the logging industry. Jimmy was well known for his strong work ethic and operational skill with logging equipment. On March 30, 1953 Jimmy and Beth Berryhill were married and together they had five children.
He enjoyed spending time with his family, tending his roses, caring for his cows, horses, chickens and his dog Tater. Over the years, he acquired several nicknames; he was best known as "Red Feather" and to his grandchildren as "Pa Feather". Those who knew Jimmy will remember his somewhat rough and tough exterior with a tender heart, clearly evidenced by his unconditional love for his family. He was an actively involved member of the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians, serving on the Tribal Board and enjoying a variety of activities for families and the Tribal Elders.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; sons, Gary and Monte; sister, Sanda Glen; and former wife Beth. Jimmy is survived by his daughters, Mary Brim and Laura O'Neill (Pat); son, Rob Estabrook (Wendy); grandchildren, Jenie, Chad, Courtney, Keri, Kellie, Michele, TJ, Mike, Amee, Kaitlin, numerous great-grandchildren and nieces Robin and Kelly. Internment will be in Roseburg Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests remembrances be given to the Yasmin Treki Memorial Scholarship at Glide High School or the charity of your choice.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2014, at Seven Feathers Casino from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
