James Robert “Red” Nichols, age 84, ¬died at his home April 21, 2018, after long illnesses of heart disease, dementia and cancer.
He was born November 23, 1933, to Charles Claude and Opal Myers
Nichols in Ellington, Missouri. His father died when Jim was five years old leaving Opal with four children under seven years of age.
In 1949, the family moved with stepfather, Howard Grantz, to Washington. The next move was to Sutherlin, Oregon, where Jim graduated from Sutherlin High school.
Jim joined the Army in 1953, and served until 1956, in the Korean War.
Once home, he tried out college at the University of Oregon. In 1961, he married Charlene Moore and continued at U of O, later transferring to Oregon State University’s School of Pharmacy.
After graduation he worked for Payless Drug in Roseburg, then the Roseburg VA pharmacy, and later at Sutherlin Drug.
He loved hunting, roaming the mountains and hills, and keeping busy.
No one could ever question his work ethic. He enjoyed his career, but his proudest products are his four children: Colleen, Robert, Jon, and Marc. He was a hands-on father changing diapers and being involved in all aspects of parenthood. Second only to his family, he loved his dogs, Molly and Babe.
To the future, Jim leaves his wife of 56 years; four children; daughters-in-law, Kris Nichols and Val Nichols; son-in-law, Merrill Gonterman; grandchildren, Hannah and Cecillia Gonterman, Archie James
(A.J.) and Erin Nichols; new great-grandson, Jennson James; and sister, Berta Goodin. He was preceded in death by his mother, Opal Grantz; sister, Glenda Stewart; and brother, Donald Nichols.
Private memorial services were held at the Roseburg VA cemetery.
