JAY LUCAS HOOTEN 85 of Roseburg, Oregon passed away Friday October 16, 2009 in a local hospital. He was born March 23, 1924 in El Centro, California to James and Irene Hooten. The Hooten family moved to the area from Imperial Valley, California in 1935. Mr. Hooten served as a Corporal in the US Marine Corps. during WWII. On July 18, 1954 in Roseburg, Oregon he married Peggy Bendorf. Jay owned and operated a dairy farm on Hooten Road in Winston for several years. He also worked as a Journeyman Millwright for many years. Jay enjoyed gold dredging, camping, fabricating and welding, geology, traveling to the warmer climate, treasure hunting, researching military history and researching and studying the bible. Survivors include his wife Peggy Hooten of Roseburg, Oregon; daughters Carol Flavin of Tigard, Oregon, Sara Hooten of Roseburg, Oregon, Linda Bault of Albany, Oregon, Rachel Russell and Ruth Rountree both of Roseburg, Oregon; sons David Hooten of Roseburg, Oregon, Steve Hooten of Riddle, Oregon and Joseph Hooten also of Roseburg, Oregon; brother Albert Hooten of Winston, Oregon; 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. A celebration of Jay's life and military honors will be held Monday November 2, 2009 at 1:00 pm at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Chaplain Jack Thomas of the Marine Corps League will officiate. Inurnment will follow within the grounds of Roseburg National Cemetery.
