John Joe Angland, Jr, 77, of Canyonville, OR was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on the evening of March 13th, 2024, with both of his daughters by his side.
John was born on October 4th, 1946, in Estacada, Or to John Joe Angland, Sr and Nancy Georgia (Leonard) Angland. John’s early years were spent in the Portland area where his family owned a bar as well as Yankee service station. One story often told was how John packed his suitcase at the ripe age of 2 and ran away from home. His mom snapped a quick picture before bringing him back inside. Later the family moved to the Riddle area and operated a secondhand store.
In May of 1972 John married Shirley Mae Hanks in Reno, NV. Not only did he gain a wife but a daughter too. The new family made their home in Riddle and in 1981 welcomed another daughter.
Due to a surgery at the age of 14 John lost the ability to read and write. He never let this stop him. He valued his independence and would ride his bike to work most days until earning his driver's license in 2005. John was a millworker most of his life until his retirement in 2009.
John loved fishing even if the fish weren’t biting. He also was a big fan of any western movie ever made. I’m sure he saw them all. If it wasn't a western he was watching it was a Christian movie. John valued his faith and would share it with all who would listen. He was a member of and active in the Riddle Baptist church until his health made it harder to attend.
John loved helping others any way he could even if it was just putting a smile on their face. Anytime he was asked if he needed anything his answer was always the same “a quarter a million dollars.”
John is survived by his daughters, Linda (Steve) Hooten of Days Creek, OR and Lisa Parsons of Elkton, OR; grandchildren Dustie (Jordan) Ross of Riddle, OR, Kasandra (Cliff) Gerlak of Bay Shore, NY, Kameron Stever of Canyonville, OR, Jasmine Parsons and Ariel Parsons of Cottage Grove, OR, Isaiah Parsons, Josiah Parsons, and Jordan Parsons of Elkton, OR; Great grandchildren Shyann McKown, Amiah McKown, Preston Ross, and Ellianna Ross of Riddle, OR, Zoe Gerlak and Willow Gerlak of Bay Shore NY, sister-in-law Linda Springer as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Shirley, and several brothers and sisters.
Memorial services will be held at Roseburg Memorial Gardens Friday, April 5th, 2024, at 2pm. Arrangements made by Wilson’s Chapel of the Roses.
