John Roosevelt Gardner

October 2, 1920 — June 12, 2014

John Roosevelt Gardner, 93 , known as "Mr. North Umpqua" passed away at his home in Roseburg, Oregon on June 12, 2014, surrounded by his three loving daughters Wendy Gardner Singleton, Carole Gardner Morris and Susan J. Williamson.

John was born October 2, 1920 in Portland Oregon, the son of Rex Root Gardner and Mary Everson Gardner. He graduated from Lincoln High School and Oregon State University in Corvallis majoring in forestry. John met the love of his life Brenda Leone DeLong at OSU. They were married after John completed his service in the U.S. Army 797th Engineer Forestry Company in Burma, during WW2. This company set up saw mills to produce lumber for roads and bridges on the Ledo Road.

In 1947 the young couple moved to Roseburg where they raised their three girls.
John owned, managed and harvested his timber, most of which was located up the North Umpqua River, hence "Mr. North Umpqua". He believed in selective cutting and loved and respected the forest as a renewable resource. He loved a good quip, loved being a "Daddy", playful and fun he was the best! He was a life-long Oregon State University "Beaver" fan and benefactor of OSU. John and Brenda had been members of the First United Methodist Church.

Brenda Leone Gardner preceded him in death in 2012.

He will be missed by his three sons-in-law Phillip Singleton, Robert Scott Morris, Bob Williamson; four grandchildren Julie Morris of Houston Texas, Bryan Morris of Winchester, Oregon, Emily Magstadt and husband Nathan Magstadt of Happy Valley, Oregon, and John Williamson of Winston, Oregon. He was especially proud of being a great-granddad to Olivia Leone Magstadt.
.
His two step-grand children Paul Singleton, Molly Singleton Morse and nine step-great grandchildren, Elijah, Autumn, Shekinah, Hosannah, Maranatha, Abigail, and Tirzah Singleton all of Roseburg; and Allison and Hayden Morse of Gresham also survive as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
