John H. "Jack" Newby

August 28, 1920 — August 27, 2012

Cmdr. John (Jack) Heaton Newby, USNR (ret.) August 28,1920 - August 27, 2012, age 92. Son of Evelyn and John Newby of Bend, Oregon, Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Helen Beverly Newby. He is also survived by daughter Mary (Robert) Holifield, son Bill (Karen) Newby, grandson Justius Schultz, and great grandchildren Parker, Connor, and Reagan Massignan. He was preceded in death by his brother Richard. Jack graduated from Bend H.S. in 1938 and Pacific University in 1942. He served with distinction as a naval aviator flying torpedo bombers off carriers in the Pacific during WW II. Although modest, unassuming, and quick to downplay his own heroism, Jack was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals in recognition of his wartime exploits. After WW II Jack coached basketball and taught American history at Roseburg H.S. until he was recalled to active duty for the Korean War. Jack remained active duty and served his country for 26 years before retiring from the navy in 1968. Jack then became the Director of the Workers Compensation Commission for the State of Maryland. He retired from that position in 1989 and settled in Roseburg, Oregon where he lived the remainder of his life.
