Joe Mataya went to be with our Lord Jesus Christ on March 21, 2015. He had a great love for his Lord, his family, and the people of many churches of which he pastored.
Joe was born on March 13, 1933 in Woodward, Iowa. He was the oldest of 6 children born to Vance and Peniche Mataya. He had a very active and hard working childhood, and is well known for his high school football abilities even now. After joining the Marine Corps in 1950, Joe served 2 tours aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard, a naval aircraft carrier, earning 7 ribbons with 5 battle stars. It was during his time as a Marine that Joe met Doris (Thorkildsen). They were married in May of 1953 and had nearly 62 beautiful years together as husband and wife. Both Joe and Doris entered Multnomah Bible School in the 50's, and he began part-time pastoring soon after. In 1970, Joe began full-time ministry with Village Missions, serving small communities in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho throughout his life.
Joe is survived by his wife, Doris, and 4 children; Daryl Mataya of Roseburg, Oregon; Joan Stull of San Luis Obispo, California; Joe "Joey" Mataya of Roseburg, Oregon; David Mataya and his wife Colleen, of Chandler, Arizona. Joe is survived by his brothers and sisters; Caroline Schiele and her husband Gary of Springfield, Oregon; Delores Geneser and her husband Bill of Granger, Iowa; Harry Mataya and his wife Delores of Des Moines, Iowa; John Mataya of Omaha, Nebraska; Lou Mataya and his wife Sandy of Carmel, Indiana. He was an uncle to many and a grandfather to Matthew, Cary, Courtney, Ashley, Brittney, BethAnn, Morgan, and Riley; and great-grandchildren Kylie, Marcus (already in heaven), Dakota, Isabella, and Erik.
We praise God for His work in and through Joe for over 50 years as a pastor. His life verse was Psalm 51:15, "O Lord, open my lips, that my mouth may declare Your praise."
Services will be held at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses in Roseburg, Oregon on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 9:30 am. Graveside military honors will be given following the service at the new Roseburg National Cemetery on the VA grounds.
