June Maxine Stiltner, age 95, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2016. She was born to the late Fred Bowen and Grace Marsters Bowen on May 25, 1921.
A lifelong Roseburg resident, June attended public school in Roseburg and graduated from Roseburg High School in1939. After graduation, she worked for Douglas County Creamery then Douglas County Farmers Co-Op. On December 28, 1945, she married the love of her life Woodrow T (Woody) Stiltner. The couple was blessed with a daughter, Joyce Colleen Stiltner, on March 17, 1955. They had a wonderful life together until Woody passed away just six months before their 50th anniversary.
In 1965, June started working at Violetta's China shop, then June and Woody began their own business in 1966, starting Stiltner's Laundromat in Roseburg. In 1971, they took over ownership of Casa Loma Hotel in Roseburg, until Woody's retirement in the late 1970s.
June was a devout Christian and loved the Lord. Her love of family and virtually everyone she met was a true reflection of her faith. Joyce's friends were always welcome in June's home and treated as if they were her own children, especially Connie (Clark) Bonham.
In 1982, June and Woody welcomed their son-in-law, Tim Stoelb, to their family. Not only did June become a mother-in-law, she proudly became a grandmother to Tim's son, Chris. When Joyce and Tim were expecting their baby in 1985, June was convinced it was a girl and even made a crocheted baby dress for the occasion. But when grandson Daniel Patrick arrived her jaw dropped and she completely forgot her camera in her purse to take a picture. Nevertheless, she beamed from ear to ear and he was a great part of her life from that moment on.
A gifted crafter, June taught many creative skills to her daughter and took on the daunting task of teaching a 6th grade 4-H knitting class to Joyce and her friends in 1966. She would routinely spend hours upon hours making doll clothes and decorating the three story Barbie dollhouse that Woody had made for their daughter, Joyce.
The great outdoors played a big part of her life. June and Woody would spend weeks camping in Eastern Oregon, hunting for deer and those all-evasive elk or sitting in a boat on the Umpqua catching salmon. Besides her husband, June had the best catch of her life in 1983, on the Umpqua River at the Forks where she showed up all the men by reeling in the only fish, a thirty-six-pound Chinook salmon, for the day.
June loved to travel. There were many family trips from tent camping in Central and Eastern Oregon, to travel trailer trips (including one along the Alcan Highway to Alaska in 1985), to car trips around other States as well as Canada and Mexico. In later years, the travel bug continued to plague her on a grander scale with overseas adventures to Japan, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Austria and France. When the subject of going someplace came up she would immediately start a list of what to pack!
Music was also her passion. She loved to listen to organ music and played the organ herself until arthritis made it too painful to play. She shared that love with her daughter Joyce and grandson Daniel, teaching them both to play the Lowry organ in her home.
June is survived by her daughter, Joyce (Tim) Stoelb, of Roseburg; two grandsons Daniel (Estelle) Stoelb of Salem, Oregon, and Chris Stoelb of Lakeview MI; and four great-grandchildren Serenity and Seth Stoelb of Salem, Oregon, and Sebastian and Cassandra Stoelb of Howard City, Michigan. She also leaves behind two cousins, Herb Morley of Laguna Beach, CA, and Doris Lee Cooksey of Portland, Oregon; along with numerous loving relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Fred and Grace Bowen; brother Adrian Bowen; and husband Woody Stiltner.
The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her illness , especially the staff at Brookdale and Amedisys Hospice.
Funeral arrangements are being provided by Wilson Chapel of the Roses. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, July 20, 2016, commencing at 9:30a.m. with services to follow at 1 pm. Private interment will be conducted at Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
