Gene L Markle

Gene Lucian Markle, 74, of Sutherlin, Oregon passed away on Sunday August 4, 2013. He was born on January 10, 1939 in Durango, Colorado to Lucian and Oveita (Mefford) Markle. Gene graduated from Roseburg High School in 1957 and attended Oregon State University and the University of Oregon. He joined the US Air Force in 1962 and during his career he was an Air Operations Officer, Electronic Warfare Officer, Electrical Engineer and a Project Engineer. Gene attended the Industrial College of Armed Forces where he received a Bachelors' Degree in Electrical Engineering. Gene earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal with eight Oak Leaf Clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Combat Readiness Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with four Oak Leaf Clusters, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Valor Device, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with four Oak Leaf Clusters. After retirement from the USAF, he worked for TRW for 10 years, followed by Boeing for 12 years. Gene enjoyed camping, fishing, golf, hunting and reading Louis L'Amour books. He was a member of the Old Crows Association and the Military Officers Association.
Gene is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janice (Mattoon), two daughters; Sandra Day of Marysville, California and Tracy Markle of Boulder, Colorado and a son; Scott Markle of Tucson, Arizona. He has five grandsons, Jesse, David, Jacob, MacGregor, and Lucian. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Duane Markle.
Funeral Service will be Friday, August 9, 2013 at 11:30 AM at Sutherlin Chapel of the Roses. The burial will be at 2 pm at Roseburg National Cemetery with Military Honors. Family and friends may pay their respects Thursday, August 8, 2013 from 10 am until 4 pm and before the service.
