Leah Rose (1942-2013)
Leah Rose passed away at her home in Oakland, Oregon on April 28, 2013 in the company of her husband (Larry Rose) and daughter (Julia Sarreal). She died at the age of 71 from complications related to breast cancer.
Leah grew up in Ellwood City, Pennsylvania with her parents (Adolph and Ann Fatter) and brothers (Jim, Eric, and Karl). In 1962, she graduated from Western Pennsylvania School of Nursing and then worked as a registered nurse for forty years. In 1967-68, she voluntarily joined the Army Nurse Corps and was a Captain in Vietnam. After serving in the war, she lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area for three years and Panama for two years. In 1973, she settled in Oregon with her daughter and first husband (Stephen Stock).
In 1992, Leah completed her education at the University of Oregon with bachelor's degree in gerontology at the age of 50. Among other employment, Leah worked for the Edgewood Nursing Home in Cottage Grove; South Lane School District; Home Health and Hospice through the Cottage Grove Hospital; Magnolia Gardens in Cottage Grove; and the Veteran's Administration Clinics in Eugene and Roseburg.
In 1992, Leah married Larry Rose and joined his family of three children (Diane White, Deborah Triplett, and Rick Rose. Leah and Larry have enjoyed life together for twenty-one years. In 2002, they moved to the Umpqua River. In retirement, Leah enjoyed gardening, traveling to visit her daughter throughout the United States and South America, visiting with friends, and living on the river.
In 1991, Leah was first diagnosed with breast cancer. During her illness, she helped found a breast cancer support group in Cottage Grove, which continues to meet. In 2006, Leah learned that the breast cancer had returned and had spread to her lungs and bones throughout her body.
Over these difficult seven years, Leah valiantly fought the spread of the disease with the support of many close friends and family members. Her strongest advocate was her husband who accompanied her from the time when Leah had chemotherapy with his mother in 1991 until her death. Leah's women's Bible study group and her breast cancer support group (Bosom Buddies) were of special importance to her. She especially enjoyed frequent visits with her daughter, son-in-law (John Sarreal), two grandsons (Flix and Benicio Sarreal), and her Paraguayan daughter (Angelina Velazquez Mason) and her husband (Phil Mason). Most of all, Leah's faith and personal relationship with Jesus sustained her.
A joyous celebration of Leah's life will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at 1:00 pm at the Family Church in Sutherlin (878 W. 6th Ave.). In lieu of flowers, Leah wanted donations to either Samaritan's Purse for Africa or the American Cancer Society.
