LUCY IRENE (HORTON) TODD

Lucy Todd passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Thursday, July 6, 2017, at the home of her daughter, Carol Turner, were she had been living for the past eighteen months.

Lucy Irene Horton was born February 24, 1917, in Walla Walla, Washington, to Ralph Arley Horton and Florence Reinette (Graves) Horton. She was the third of four children; a brother, Lester, a sister, Helen, and a brother, Raymond. Her father worked for Pacific Power and Light Company.

They moved to Astoria, Oregon, when she was in first grade, as her father was transferred there to be superintendent of the Pacific Power steam plant. After graduation from Astoria High School, she went to Astoria Business College where she learned to be a secretary and was hired by Young's Bay Lumber Company in the office at Warrenton, Oregon, seven miles from Astoria.

It was there that she met John D. Todd. They were married in Astoria in 1939. They moved to Roseburg in 1943. There, they were active members of the community and raised five children. Lucy was a home maker and also kept the books for the 235 rental units owned and operated by the Todds. She belonged to the First United Methodist Church. When the children were growing up, she was a Sunday school teacher there. Lucy was a member and past president of Chapter BI, P.E.O. She volunteered at the Douglas Community Hospital gift shop and for the Red Cross bloodmobile, as well as being a five gallon blood donor. She and John enjoyed traveling and playing golf.

John passed away in 2004. Her siblings all preceded her in death. Lucy's children are Marilyn Doughton (Kerwin) and Carol Turner of Roseburg, John R. Todd (Nancy) of Palm Springs, CA., Loretta Milton of Portland, and Susan Merk (Fred) of Mesa, AZ. Lucy had 16 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren. She also had many nieces and nephews. In the mid 80s, the Todds were the host family for a girl from Turkey, Armagan (Kural) Bollig, who still calls Lucy, Mom.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, August 13th, 2017, at 2 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church; 1771 W. Harvard, Roseburg, OR 97471. A reception will follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to UCC Foundation, Wildlife Safari, Red Cross, P.E.O. Foundation, or First United Methodist Church.
