Margaret Burkhardt passed away quietly Saturday night, June 9, 2012, at her home. Margaret, known to her friends as Maggie "B", was born and grew up in Orangeburg, South Carolina. She was married there and had two children, James and Carol. Her first husband perished in a car accident in the early 1950's. Margaret worked in Orangeburg at U.S. Plywood's payroll department for several years - supporting herself and two youngsters on a very slim budget. She continued working after meeting and marrying Dan Burkhardt (at U.S. Plywood). She eventually became a secretary to a nuclear physicist at the Savannah River Project in Aiken, South Carolina. In 1964, the family moved to Roseburg, and Margaret continued her working career as a secretary with the County Public Works Department and as a secretary/bookkeeper with Bill Gray at World Wide Woods. Around this time, she became interested in golf and never looked back. The weather seldom got bad enough to keep her off the golf course at Stewart Park or later at the Roseburg Country Club. Eventually, after leaving the World Wide Woods job, she helped our son, Jeff and his wife run Helen's Flowers - this evolved into "Maggie Bee's" and the business was sold. Margaret enjoyed several years of retirement and remained active with her golf. The past couple of years, failing eyesight and generally declining health forced her to cut back on her usual full-throttle approach to life. Margaret is survived by her husband, Dan; our daughter, Carol Timms and husband Sammy; her brother Howard Surles of Mountain Home, Idaho; grandchildren: Anne-Charlotte Squires, M.D. of Abingdon, Virginia, Stephaney Bonney of Sacramento, California and Shane Burkhardt of Battle Creek, Michigan. She was preceded in death by our son, Jeff, in 2008. She will be truly missed by us all. A chapel service will be held at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 14, 2012. All friends are welcome. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the American Cancer Society is suggested.
