Margaret Earwood (Luhmann) Earwood

Margaret Helen Earwood, nearly 93, peacefully passed away on May 2nd, 2013 in her home in Callahan Village, surrounded by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and loving caregivers. One of her friends once asked her what she preferred to be called. She replied, "Grandma". It was fitting that it was her grandchildren holding her hands as she passed on to heaven.
Margaret was born in Hendricks, Minnesota, on June 29th, 1920 to Bertha and Frank Luhmann. She was the youngest of four girls in the Luhmann family, Her sisters were Gertrude, Francis and Marie. She grew up on a farm in a very loving family in Hendricks, Minnesota where she graduated from High School. She learned love, hospitality and laughter from her parents. Everyone was welcome at their house for big Sunday dinners and visiting. In spite of the depression they ate well because of the trading her mother did for home cooked meals from her farm animals and canning in exchange for oranges and fresh produce from contacts in the Lake City. After graduating from high school, she later moved to Lohrville, Iowa to help her sister's family and while there she met her husband of 52 years, Donald Edgar Earwood, Sr. They were married December 25th, 1940.
Don and Margaret had their first three children, Fred Russell Earwood, Nancy Luh Meyer, and Donald Edgar (Woody)Earwood Jr. in Iowa. Two infant children, Donis Ann and Tiny, did not survive, Their last son, Terry E. Earwood was born in Oregon after their cross country move to Riddle to manage Copeland Lumber Yard during the housing boom for families who worked at Hanna Nickel. They had the pleasure of celebrating their 50th anniversary before his passing in1992. She lived in the Riddle, Myrtle Creek and Roseburg areas for the remainder of her life, living in Callahan Village for the last five years. The family is so thankful for the friendships of residents and staff and loving care she experienced at Callahan Village.
Margaret enjoyed her family most of all. She was the nucleus of the family, holding everyone together with her love, generosity, creativeness and the bond she created with each person, whether her children, grandchildren or great-grandchildren. She made each one feel like her favorite. She focused on her family's interests, joys and struggles to make life better for each one. She took care of her son Terry for years after a paralyzing car accident, and of two daughter-in-laws during times of serious illness. She provided a safe haven to her grandchildren, opening her home and heart to them through their growing years. She was an excellent cook, homemaker, seamstress, painter, bowler, and home decorator. She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family and was a lot of fun wherever she went, including watching basketball and gardening. She was a member of Westside Christian Church and was known to pray for each of her children and grandchildren on her knees. She was a member Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and was Grand Matron of Eastern Star while in Iowa.
Margaret was preceded in death by members of her beloved family, her husband, Don, her sisters, two infant children, and her daughter-in-law(Fred's wife), Mary Ellen Earwood.
She is survived by her children, Fred Earwood (Lee Lehrfald), Nancy Meyer (Gary), Terry Earwood, and daughter-in-law Linda Walker, all of Roseburg and Don(Woody) Earwood(Connie) of Hillsboro OR; her grandchildren, from Fred: Charlie and Angie Earwood, and Traci Zenti(Peter), from Nancy: Bill Weber(Jill), Rebecca Rose Neal(Jim), Randy Rose(Christina), From Woody: Amanda Bautista(Joel), and Andrea Earwood; From Terry: Jennifer Martin(Russel) and Nichole Earwood(Skyler Gardner) and her adored 20 great-grandchildren as well.
A memorial service will be held at Westside Christian Church at 11:30am Wednesday, May 8th, 2013. Arrangements by Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. 541-673-4455
