Mary Helen Mooers
1931-2012
Our wonderful mother, Mary Mooers, passed away peacefully in her sleep at home on Monday, January 23, 2012. Mary's husband, Robert and son, David were at her side as she left this world.
Mary was born on March 1, 1931 in Seattle, Washington to Frederick and Helen Harford. She married her lifelong companion Dr. Robert R. Mooers on June 21, 1952 shortly after graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington with a degree in Pharmacy. Mary was an Alpha Phi sorority and Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society member. Bob and Mary moved to Roseburg, Oregon. Mary set up a household as Bob established his family medicine practice. Mary became active in the community while raising four children. She was an early member and later President ('71-'72) of the Chapter CU of the PEO Sisterhood, an organization dedicated to supporting women's higher education. In the 60's she was a Republican precinct chair. She enjoyed bridge, skiing with family, tennis and golf with friends. She never tired of traveling in the Northwest, especially to the beaches and mountains. Mary and Bob remained inseparable throughout the years.
In recent years, the unrelenting progression of aging slowed our active mother and stole her memory. With the support of her family, Mother was able to stay home with Dad.
Mother was the constant warm guiding light of the family. She was selfless in her caring of others. She gave everyone a warm and heartfelt smile. She encouraged hard work and diligence, but was unconditional with her love for, and acceptance of, family and friends. Mom quietly led a good life. We will all miss her so terribly much. We will miss her smile, her warmth, her caring.
Mary is survived by her husband, Dr. Robert R Mooers; children, F. Bruce (Shireen), Molly (Ron Ketelsen), David (Pam), Brian R. (Mary E.); and grandchildren, David P., Brian R., Kevin, Alex, Sara, Eric, Sally, and Dylan. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Roberta Mooers. Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Alice Walton and brothers-in-law, Dudley Walton and David G. Mooers.
A memorial service will be held for family and friends to celebrate Mary's life on Saturday, February 4, 2012 at 1 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 823 SE Lane, Roseburg. Immediate family will gather earlier that day at 10:30 a.m. at Roseburg Memorial Gardens Valley View Cemetery, 1056 NW Hicks for a private burial. The family gives special thanks and appreciation to the staff of Tender Home Care for their help the last three years.
