Maxine B. Burke

June 22, 1929 — November 27, 2015

Passed on Friday, November 27, 2015, after a battle with Alzheimers. She was born June 22, 1929, in Welling, Oklahoma, to parents Edna Baker and John Sanders.

Maxine was proud of her Cherokee heritage and the special bond with her sisters Polly and Jane. The girls spent there infancy with each other in Oklahoma before being sent to a Native American boarding school (Dwight Mission Cherokee Children School). They graduated together from the high school, which is now named The Haskell Indian Nations University.

She married Webb Burke June 1, 1948, and then raised nine children. The Burke family moved around Douglas County, having resided in Glendale, Camas Valley, Glide and Roseburg.

Mrs. Burke found strength and peace through her special relationship with the Lord while raising her family. She enjoyed church worship, gardening, canning, swimming, bowling, singing and spending time with her many grandchildren. She was possessed of a kind and nurturing nature, while no stranger entered her door. Her home was warm and welcoming as there was always an extra chair at the kitchen table for those in need of a home cooked meal.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years, Webb; sons Larry and Tony; daughter Jacqueline; sisters Polly Root and Jane Kennedy; and Brother Clifford Vanderpool Jr.

Survivors are her children Roy (Sherry) Burke, John (Angie) Burke, Edna (Terry) Schaefer, Debbie (Jim) Petsch, Dorothy (Steve) Fisher, Melvin (Kristina) Burke and daughter-in-law Sharon (Bob) Pyle; 14 grandchildren Michelle Pohl, Jason Burke, Jerry Burke, D.J. Kooken, Jered Stoffal, Mollie Winship, Jacqueline Petsch, Forrest Fisher, Owen Fisher, Gabe Burke, Noah Burke, Betsy Burke, Gena King, and Marva Judd; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Ann Manard; Sharon (Tom) Barrett; and sister-in-law Sheryl Vanderpool.

The family is grateful for the loving care given by the wonderful staff at Callahan Court during Maxine's seven year stay there, with special thanks to Mercy Hospice Care.

A memorial service will be held at Grace Family Center Church, 1138 NE Lincoln, Roseburg, OR, on Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 2 p.m.
