Norma was born in Vernon, Texas, to Alfred and Helen Cross. The family moved to Coachella, California, when Norma was 6 years old. She attended school and graduated in Coachella and went on the complete her associate degree at Santa Monica Community College.
Norma met Dale Townsend in January of 1956. They married in July of that year. They moved to the Los Angeles area where they completed their educations.
Norma worked in school finance until her retirement in 1998. She and Dale then moved to Roseburg to be closer to family.
Norma is survived by her husband of 66 years, Dale Townsend, her daughter Karen Cornwell and son Mark Townsend and his wife, Kelley Townsend, along with seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Norma loved gardening and gardening loved her back. Much of her life was shared with Dale in service to Churches of Christ in California and Oregon.
Her death leaves a vacancy which will be mourned by her family and her many friends.
Services in Norma's honor will take place Tuesday, July 26, at 11 a.m. at the Garden Valley Church of Christ, 1475 NW Garden Valley Blvd., Roseburg.
