Opal Hanson (Howe) Hanson

Opal Hanson (97) passed away November 28, 2012. She was born October 8, 1915 in Wallace, Nebraska to James H. Howe and Hulda (Martin) Howe.
She graduated from Wallace High School as valedictorian.
Opal married her high school sweetheart, Grant Phillips, Jr. Together, they had three children, Gary Lee, Myron Grant(Lynn) and Daphne Banks. She had 8 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grant, and a grandson, Jack Phillips.
Opal and Grant moved to Roseburg, Oregon in 1936. She was active in many organizations. Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile, Lady Moose, Lady Elks and others. Shortly after moving to Roseburg, she and several other lady friends formed a sewing club that remained active for 70 years. She was an accomplished pianist and also sang in the church choir. She was a lifelong member of the Roseburg Methodist Church.
Opal married Leslie Hanson in 1979. Les passed away in 2001.
The family wishes to thank the kindness of her caregivers at the Garden Valley Retirement Home.
A celebration of life will be held at 2PM on January 19, 2013 at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses, 965 Harvard Ave., Roseburg, Oregon. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, c/o Daughters of the Nile Foundation, 6705 Mesa Drive, Austin, Texas 78731-2817 or to your favorite charity.
