Oren Einar Nordhagen
Age 92, of Glide, Oregon, passed away of natural causes on Monday, May 24, 2010. He was born on June 4, 1917, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, to Olaf and Anna (Hemstad) Nordhagen. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1942. Oren was a D-Day survivor having landed on Omaha Beach as a member of the 743rd Tank Batallion. He was later injured in the battle of St. Lo for which he received a Purple Heart.
He married Dorothy Vanous on June 20, 1945, in Thief River Falls, Minnesota. They later moved to North Dakota and then to southern California where they spent many years raising their six children. In 1964 the family moved to Glide, Oregon. Oren worked for many years at the Glide Forest Service and The Wolf Creek Job Corps. He retired in 1979 and he and Dorothy spent many happy years traveling, gardening, attending baseball games and visiting their children and grandchildren. Dorothy proceeded him in death on May 25, 1997. Oren was a member of The Military Order of the Purple Heart of The USA and the VFW Post #4316. He loved traveling, surfing the internet, sending and reading emails, and reseaching family genealogy.
He is survived by his six children, fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Oren's sons and their families are: Gene of Glide, OR and his son Evin of Roseburg, Oregon; Wayne, his wife Carrie and their daughters Jennie, Anna McAfee, her husband Nate and daughter Tatum, and Jessica, all of Valencia, California; Cal, his wife Vicki and their children Kellie Davenport, her husband Jason and their sons Levi and Tytus of Newhall, California; Carrie Martin, her husband Corey and their daughters Malia and Noa of Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Jenny Blanken and her husband Josh, and Chris Burrows all of Valencia; Lee, his wife Cheryl and their children Ryan and Monique, all of Salem, Oregon. Oren's daughters and their families are: Janice, her husband Russell Stone and their children David, his wife Mary and their sons Christopher, Matthew and Jonathan all of Roseburg, Cari Spicer and her children
Lindsay and Cole, all of Laguna Niguel, California; Kathy Nordhagen of Valencia, and her daughters Jodie Tucker and her husband Mark of Roseburg, and Paula Ryan, her husband Kyle and their children Brendan, Pierce and Presley, all of Redondo Beach, California.
He is also survived by his siblings Millie Fynskov of White City, Oregon; Lester and Dorothy Nordhagen of Thief River Falls; George and Vivian Nordhagen of Central Point, Oregon, and Lillian Rux of Erskine, Minnesota, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Oren was proceeded in death by siblings Roy Nordhagen and Sylvia Von Wald.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 28, 2010, at 11 a.m. at Wimberly Cemetery in Glide with Pastor Mike Miller officiating. At the family's request, contributions may be made in lieu of flowers in Oren's memory to Disabled American Veterans, PO Box 14301, Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301 or may be left at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses, 965 West Harvard Avenue, Roseburg, OR 97470 who is in charge of arrangements.
