On Thursday, August 18, 2011, Paul passed away at the Portland VA Medical Center after a 20 year battle with kidney disease. He was born on December 3, 1938, in Coquille, Oregon, to Clyde A. Chitwood (deceased) and Ellen K. Chitwood of Roseburg, Oregon. He was 72 years old and had lived in Winston, Oregon for the past 33 years.
On August 22, 1959, he married his wife, Jo Ann Severson of 52 years two weeks after the Roseburg blast. They had 3 children; 1 daughter, Elizabeth K. Wasson, spouse, James D. Wasson of Tacoma, Washington. 2 sons; William H. Chitwood of Mt. Hood, Oregon; Daniel I. Chitwood, spouse Betsy K. Chitwood of Lookingglass, Oregon.
He attended Roseburg High School Class of 1958. He retired from the U.S. Army, November 1, 1978, with the rank of SFC/E-7 with over 20 years of service plus serving in the Oregon National Guard. He was a Vietnam Veteran, serving a 12 month tour of duty from July 1968- July 1969 with the 5th Mechanical Infantry Brigade (Augemented) Red Diamond.
Paul worked for Roseburg Forest Products Particle Board Plant for 16 years, retiring July 27, 1998. He was a Dryer Room Operator. In 1982- 1983, he worked Daniel's Construction Company in Evanston, Wyoming, as a Supply Parts Man building a sour gas plant. As a youth he managed the 2 Dairy Queens in Roseburg till entering the services. Paul was a News Review carrier for 5 years. He also raised and sold chickens.
Paul belonged to the Boy Scouts of America, member of the De Molay and the Masonic Laurel Lodge No. 13 of Roseburg, Oregon, and Square Danced with the Buckaneers at the Red Barn.
Paul was an avid roller skater competing in dance and free style skating. He loved playing chess, electronics, reading, woodworking, playing cards, going for drives in the country and watching the Denver Broncos. He is survived by one brother, Captain Carl Steven Chitwood, U.S. Navy Retired of Virginia Beach, Virginia. Sister; Susan Beth Chitwood of Roseburg, Oregon. Six grandchildren; Scott a Williams, Mark C. Williams, Kevin D. Williams of Tacoma, Washington; Mark Chitwood Olson of John Day, Oregon;Mary E. Chitwood and Gen M. Chitwood of Lookingglass, Oregon; one great-grandchild; Angle M. Kase-Williams, Tacoma, Washington and 6 step grandchildren, plus numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by; sister-in-law Myrna K. Chitwood, niece Cathi K. Mapes, nephew David Kirkendall.
Paul was a member of the First Christian Church. Memorial Services will be held Aug. 27, 2011, at 2:00 PM at the First Christian Church, 432 SE Kane, Roseburg, Oregon. Officiating; Ministers Ryan Nichols and William (Bill) Johnson, Dist. 12 Chaplain, Veteran of Foreign Wars.
