PHYLLIS LAVERNA WALDIER BOYER passed away peacefully on Monday July 20, 2009 at the age of 91 in Roseburg, Oregon. She was born March 27, 1918 on a farm near Lafayette, Minnesota. Phyllis lived there until she was five at which time she moved with her sister Lorraine and parents Albert and Thea Johnson to Excelsior on Lake Minnetonka. She spent her time skiing, skating, swimming and boating on Lake Minnetonka. She also was trained in music and elocution which she made use of all of her life. At a piano recital at age eight, she met and played the piano in a concert for her future husband, Lowell John Waldier. Phyllis graduated from Excelsior High School receiving a scholarship to MacPhail School of Drama from which she also graduated. John Waldier had graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Law and was hired by Employers Mutual in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was at this time Phyllis and John were married in the Lutheran Church on October 7, 1939 in St. Johns. Their first son Bruce Edward was born in Minneapolis. The company sent John and Phyllis to Seattle, Washington where John worked as a company lawyer and their second child, bonnie Lain was born. After three years in Seattle, John was sent to the San Francisco office of Employers Mutual. He soon left the company and opened his own law office in San Carlos, California later moving to Woodside. Two more children were born to them, Brian Aaron and Beth Ann. Phyllis and John loved to travel and went to Canada, Hawaii, Scandinavia, Denmark, German, Switzerland, Austria, Mexico and Alaska. In Oregon, John and Phyllis developed the Kellogg Springs Christian Camp and Conference center with friends Bill and Beverly Bulkeley. Phyllis worked at Umpqua Community College as a secretary and later graduated with a humanities degree at the age of 60. She continued using her talents in music and drama writing many plays for her women's church group and playing the piano. After John passed away in 1994, Phyllis moved to Sutherlin, Oregon. In 1997 she married Howard Boyer at Faith Lutheran Church in Roseburg. Phyllis passed away leaving four children Bruce (Bonnie) Waldier of Oakland, Oregon, Bonnie (Dave) Evans also of Oakland, Oregon, Brian (Vickie) Waldier of Ilwaco, Washington and Beth (Morry) Stover of Vancouver, Washington; 11 grandchildren Rick (Ruby) Schwartz of Houston, Texas, Angie (Jeff) Sheets of Portland, Oregon, Teresa (Steve) Gleason of Newberry, California, Christopher (Michaela) Waldier of Sutherlin, Oregon, Shelby (Thom) Fields of Kennewick, Washington, Donald (Michelle) Evans of Brookings, Oregon, Darin (Shawna) Evans of Pasco, Washington, Samanda (Kevin) Gohman of Kennewick, Washington, Aaron Waldier of Portland, Oregon, April (Elliott) Edwards of Lynwood, Washington and John Stover of Van Nuys, California; 25 great grandchildren and special friend Warren Tack of Sutherlin, Oregon. Funeral services will be held Saturday July 25, 2009 at 10:30 am at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. A reception will follow at Riverview Terrace. Private interment will be held in the Kellogg Cemetery, Kellogg, Oregon. Contributions may be made in Phyllis' memory to Faith Lutheran Church and these may be left at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses who is in charge of arrangements.
