Richard Joseph Callaway

October 31, 1928 — May 13, 2015

Richard Joseph Callaway was born on October 31, 1928, in Washington, D.C, he passed on May 13, 2015 at the age of 85 in Roseburg, Oregon.

Richard was preceded in death by his wife, Helen and his brother Captain Steven Ward Callaway II.

He is survived by his daughter, Kathleen Rusling, nee Callaway (Australia), her husband Dean Rusling and grandchildren Jessica and Corey; also by his son, Steven Callaway (Roseburg), wife Joanne Callaway, and grandchildren Sarah, Andrew and Mark.

Born in Washington, D.C. Richard was the son of navy Capt. Steven Ward Callaway. Richard attended the University of Washington graduating as an oceanographer and later attended OSU to complete a Masters Degree. Richard met the love of his life Helen, while they were both employed at the Fisheries & Wildlife Dept. in Seattle, Washington. Helen was a secretary and Richard was employed to do research. After marrying, they moved to Honolulu to work for Fisheries where Kathleen and Steven were born.

Richard was very well respected in his field of oceanography and estuaries. In 1964 Richard was transferred from Portland to Corvallis to work for the EPA. It was here that his work developed as a specialist of West Coast Estuaries. One of the things Richard will be remembered for will be his one-man enterprise, MAROLSOL (Marine Pollution Solutions).

His wife Helen always called him brilliant and his colleagues found him to be an exceedingly competent and gifted mathematician and mathematical modeler who had an enormous capacity for practical problem solving due to his ability to array, compartmentalize and visualize spatial and temporal relationships between chemical and physical data.

In his career, he wrote and co-authored many research papers and was an invited guest speaker at many symposiums world wide.

Richard will be remembered by his family for being a generous, at times stoic man, with a wry sense of humor. He was devoted to his wife Helen and his children Kathleen and Steven and 5 grandchildren.

He will be profoundly missed by his family in whom he instilled the potential for good, and a strong compassion for others less fortunate.

A private memorial will be held on May 15, 2015 at Yaquina Bay, Oregon to remember his love for the ocean and estuaries.
