Richard L. Hanlin 6/10/1927 - 10/14/2014
Richard L. Hanlin ( Dick) passed away peacefully October 14, 2014. He was born June 10, 1927 to Jerry and Ina (Karjala) Hanlin in the Aberdeen, Washington area. Dick's parents worked in logging camps and this is where Dick learned his love for the woods. When they weren't in the camps they were at their home on Hood Canal, Tahuya, Washington where Dick lived on the water boating, swimming and fishing. After graduating from high school, Dick enlisted in the Navy and spent two years serving his country. He then attended the University of Washington and graduated with a degree in Forestry. In 1952, he moved to Douglas County and worked for the County as a forester. This is where he met his wife Wilma, who preceded him in death in February, 2012, after 58 years of marriage.
Dick worked for 40 years for many of the timber companies of Douglas Count as a timber cruiser. He served as a director for the Oregon Logging Conference, and was President of the Logging Conference in 1979. After retirement, he continued to cruise timber for private individuals. He also loved to hunt and fish. There were many family hunting and fishing trips.
Dick is survived by three children, Jerry, Gina, and John, and 4 grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, Brett and Beau. He also leaves behind a sister in law and numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and cousins and many dear friends, old and new
Dad never knew a stranger. With Mom by his side, we are sure he is making many new friends in Heaven and catching up with loved ones already there.
A memorial service will be Friday, October 24, 2014 at 1 pm with a reception to follow the service at Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. Private interment will be at Roseburg Memorial Gardens. Please visit Dick's web site at
