Robert "Bob" Short was born July 16, 1925 in King City, California. He moved with his family to Santa Cruz when he was 8 years old. Bob left Santa Cruz High after his junior year to work in the Richmond shipyard during WWII. In January 15, 1943 he left to join the US Marine Corps and was assigned to the B-25 as a turret gunner. Bob met Peggy Gateley in Oklahoma City while he was in the Marines. The couple married February 19, 1944 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. After the war, with Peggy's help, Bob graduated from San Jose State College then joined the US Air Force in 1950. He served at many different Air Force Bases , including Woodbridge, England, Nellis AFB, Tyndall AFB, and Maxwell AFB. He retired from the Air Force as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Bob and Peggy lived in the Santa Cruz-Soquel area for 26 years. They have four children: Steve and his wife, Bonnie Short of Orange, California; Mike Short and Sherry of Boulder Creek, California; Janis and her husband, Jim Cuddy of Roseburg, Oregon and Rob and his wife, Joanna Short of Fairfax, California. They also have ten grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Bob served 12 years in his dream job as a California State Park Ranger. His duty assignments included New Brighton Beach, San Mateo Coast and 5 years at Henry Cowell Redwoods. His last assignment was 5 years as Supervising Ranger of Angel Island State Park located near San Francisco. The Shorts retired again in 1979 and moved to Roseburg, Oregon to be near their daughter and family.
The Shorts always loved to travel and enjoyed living in England for a year and a half. In civilian life they made more than 20 trips to Europe and an equal number of visits to Hawaii. One of the highlights of their travels was skiing the base of the Matterhorn in Zermatt Switzerland In 1953, they spent all night on the pavement in London to secure a good spot for viewing the coronation procession for Queen Elizabeth II.
