He was 87 years old, passing away just two weeks prior to his 88th birthday. Bob was born to Raymond and Elsie Green, March 10, 1923, in Pontiac, Illinois. After graduating from Roseburg High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January, 1942. He married Lela Wilson in Eugene, 0regon in July, 1944. His Naval training and duty began in Alameda, California Air Station where he trained as a flight crew member, and began his life long passion for airplanes and flying. During World War II he served with the 84th Patrol Squadron. His Naval duty took him to Iceland in 1942, then to England 1943 and 1944. His North Atlantic tour of duty earned his squadron the Presidential Unit Citation Award for their successful patrols against German submarines. Upon returning to the United States, Bob was stationed in Maryland and lived in Washington DC. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in Bremerton, Washington, in October, 1945.
