Robert William Henry

December 19, 1914 — October 18, 2012

ROBERT "BOB" WILLIAM HENRY, 97, of Glide, Oregon passed peacefully from this earth to be with his loving Savior, Jesus Christ, on October 18, 2012 at home, surrounded by his family whom he loved deeply. Bob was born December 19, 1914 in Jackson County, Oregon, to Frank E. Henry and Margory Olive Lees. On June 15, 1937, he married Minnie May Gooch in Portland, Oregon. Bob was a dedicated and loving father, husband, grandfather and a man who was a friend to a very large number of people. He was a member of the Glide Church of Christ and he was was among the first members of the Douglas County Search and Rescue unit in its formative stages. Having a strong work ethic, he began at a very young age working at serveral jobs, received training as a welder, and at age 17, joined the "CCC" (Civilian Conservation Corps) where he was assigned as a truck driver delivering rations and supplies to the various camps throughout Oregon. During WWII, he worked as a welder in the Portland Ship yards. Later, he began following the lumber industry as a logger, heavy mechanic, welder and log truck driver, completing his work-years being a fire/equipment watchman on numerous and varied job sites, befor finally retiring in 1998. Bob and May began their life together in 1937, eventually having 8 children: Carol (Richard), 4 children Deanna, Tamera, Bridget, and Curt; Jim (Carol), 4 children Robert, Susan, Steven, and Sandra; John (dcsd); Pat (Dave), 3 children Laurie, Doug, and Leslie; Ed (Arlene), 2 children Dion and Dexter; Don (Donna), 2 children Christopher and Shawn; Linda, 4 children Nathan, Jason, John and Travis; Cindy (Rob), 3 children James, april and Crystal. He was preceded by his son, John (1966), granddaughter Bridget (1977), his loving wife, May (1992), and grandson Nathan (1996). His love of family is legendary and he always had open and loving arms for them. His children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great- great grandchildren filled his life with pride and joy and the number, now near 90, continues to grow. He loved each individually and nothing made him happier than having his entire family gathered around him. Bob was an avid hunter and enjoyed hunting deer and elk with friends and family. Bob was a natural born storyteller. His stores of those hunts, which were always filled with humor and could last many hours, filled hundreds of attentive ears and passed his love of target shooting and hunting to his ever growing family. He was proficient in reloading his own (family and friends as well) ammunition, taking great and well deserved pride in being the most accurate with the most "punch" and longest reach. His "dead on" aim and respect for the sport of shooting and hunting reflected his care and love for firearms, his ammunition as well as the animals he hunted and forests and fields he so enjoyed being in. While being a vigorous man, he had a soft heart, an easy manner, limitless love, unshakeable strength in his beliefs, and a deep concern for everyone he knew. A Celbration of Life (potluck) will be held at the Glide Community Building Tuesday, October 23, 2012 from 4pm until 9pm. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob's name to the Glide Church of Christ.
