Roberta Ann Carson, age 84, passed away in her home in Oakland, Oregon, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, May 29, 2018. She was born December 11, 1933, in Portland, Oregon, to parents Agnus Theresa (Gangle) and Jesse Alvin Rowley. She was the sixth child of seven children; Marie (Chuck) Dubbels, Marvin (June), Jay (Peggy), Dean (Ann), Maxine (Charlie) Shannon and Danny (Jackie).
She lived with her family in the Tualatin area attending Sherwood High School. In 1950, she married the love of her life, Elmo Richard Carson. They were married until Elmo’s death in 2009, nearly 60 years. They had five children, all sons, Larry (Rosalie), Ed (Mary), Tim, Kit (Cindy) and Randy (Cheryl), with the oldest and the youngest born on the same day. There are 12 grandchildren, Richard, Tricia, Todd, Melissa, Autumn, Travis, Brook, Jacob, Jesse, Cody, Erik and James. There are 19 great-grandchildren, many who called her “Grandma Pie” for all the pies she would prepare for visiting family. She is survived by all of her children; her brother, Dean; and sisters-in-law, Ann, Peggy and Jackie.
Roberta was a stay-at-home mom for the early years of her children’s lives. In 1975, she began utilizing her expert sewing skills managing the fabrics department at Payless Stores in Roseburg, Oregon, where she made friendships that followed her into retirement in 1998.
Roberta was on the Oakland City Council for three terms where she was very involved in the issues of the Oakland Community. She was a member of the Oakland Church of Christ and was active in Lions club as a Lady Lion.
With five boys she learned to adapt to unusual pets. Always accepting what was brought home like roosters, squirrels, white mice, turtles, ducks and an unfixed skunk. Quilting beautiful quilts for her grandchildren was a hobby that she enjoyed for many years. Roberta always looked young for her age. When she was 80 years old, she had to show her identification to get the senior discount at a high school basketball game. In later years her greatest enjoyment was the frequent visits of her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
We would like to give special thanks to her live-in caregiver, Chastity Peterson, for all her loving care. She became the daughter Roberta never had in the final months of her life. We want to thank Amedisys Hospice of Roseburg for all their help and care.
