Shirley Jeanne Sims
Age 87, passed away quietly in her home on Wednesday, March 14, 2012. She was born August 29, 1924 in Medford, Oregon, the daughter of Donald Gray Lawrence Sr. and Pearl Hazel (Skinner) Lawrence.
A 1942 graduate of Medford High School, Shirley worked at the Craterian and Holly theaters, the Holland Hotel Restaurant, the First National Bank of Medford and attended the Robertson School of Business.
On September 13, 1942 she married Raymond Owen Sims, the son of Herbert and Josephine Sims of Medford. While Ray served in the Navy during World War II, Shirley worked at a bank in Bremerton, Washington and then at Lockheed-Vega in Los Angeles. Toward the end of the war the couple started a family, but Shirley continued working for the war effort. After the war she worked at Trowbridge Electric in Medford and Roseburg, and later Sims Electric, Inc. when the family moved to Roseburg. She obtained a degree from the Chicago School of Interior Design, and a certificate in transactional analysis from Umpqua Community College.
Shirley was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Association, President of the lady golfers at the Roseburg Country Club, and a recipient of the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce Community Service Award. A wonderful landscape artist, throughout her life she supported the arts and was a past president of the Umpqua Valley Arts Association. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Roseburg and Wilbur, Shirley showed devotion to her faith by working in her church and serving the community. She enjoyed world travel.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Donald G. Lawrence, Jr., and nephew Donald Lawrence, III.
Shirley is survived by her husband, Ray; and her children, Donnea Sims of Portland, Gary Sims (Debra), Marcia Sims, and David Sims (Meddie), all of Medford; her sister, Mrs. Patricia Jacobs (Don) of Medford; and niece, Vivian Lawrence of Florida. She was devoted to her family and dearly loved her 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements are by Wilson's Chapel of the Roses. She will be entered in the Old Section of the Roseburg Memorial Gardens.
Her memorial service will be held at the Wilbur United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. on March 30, 2012.
