Tommy Preston Cortez passed away December 28, 2018, after a long illness stemming from Agent Orange. He was born August 13, 1951, to Thomas and Louise Cortez and was a lifelong resident of Roseburg, Oregon.
He proudly served his country as a member of the 2nd Bn.1st Marine, 1st Marine Division. He worked in the wood products industry and was a long-haul driver. He provided help for Veterans, volunteered in keeping the grounds manicured at the V.A. golf course, was instrumental in erecting the traveling Vietnam War Memorial Wall and coached the Children’s Special Olympics Golf program of Douglas County. He was truly happiest and did his best work when helping people in need.
He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas R. Cortez, and sister, Allison Rechain. Tommy is survived by his mother, Louise I. Cortez; daughter, Deana M. Frost; and his granddaughters, Kelly Frost, Jenna Frost, Jayme Glen of Oregon; and by his son, Justin Rutter Cortez and his wife Nia of California; his sisters, Roxanne Hubbard and husband Paul, and Caila O’Keefe and husband Patrick. He is also survived by numerous relatives; nephews and nieces, cousins; and close friends, Randy Hill, John Erickson and Greg and Margo Thomason of Douglas County.
Private interment for family and friends will take place at the Roseburg Military Cemetery January 11th, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate to: The Children’s Special Olympics of Douglas County, PO Box 541, Roseburg, OR 97470.
