Varlan Llewellyn Oberman

August 23, 1940 — April 11, 2024

Varlan L Oberman, age 83, went to be with his savior Jesus on April 11, 2024, at his home in Sutherlin, surrounded by his family.

Varlan was born in Roseburg, OR. August 23, 1940, to parents Frank & Hildreth Oberman, and grew up in Oakland, OR, where he attended school and had one of his first jobs, haying for Mildred Kanipe. In 1960, he married Ethel M Adair. They made their home in Sutherlin. Varlan worked for Martin Box. During this time, they had their first two children, Kathy & Kalan. When Martin Box closed, they moved to Northern California, where he worked with his brother, Derwin Oberman, who worked at Engle Mine in Taylorsville, CA. After Engle Mine, he worked for Plumas Lumber Company. During this time, their third child, Frank, was born. In 1969, Varlan & his family moved back to Sutherlin. Living in Sutherlin, they had their 4th child, a daughter Sharon, which completed their family. Varlan worked at Georgia Pacific till they shut down. He worked at Murphy Plywood and Orenco, then Retired from Roseburg Lumber.
One of Varlan’s close-to-the-heart enjoyments was music, playing guitar, and singing with his brother Myran Oberman, and the time he spent as a part of the group, the Reflections. He also enjoyed teaching and playing with his kids and grandkids the gift of music.

After the death of his wife, Ethel M. Oberman, in 2015, he married Lila (Brown) Hundley on November 9, 2019. They had almost five great years together, being close to their families, taking drives, camping & playing dice.

Varlan is a man who loved the Lord and his family and friends. He enjoyed being close to Jesus, his family, church, guitar playing, gardening, woodworking, watching good movies and drives to the coast for crab.
During the last few days of his life, the hospice Chaplin came to visit and said he had heard of Varlan. They called him the guitar man and preacher. He told everyone that accepting Jesus in their heart was the only way to get to heaven and wanted to see everyone there.

He leaves behind his wife, Lila J Hundley Oberman. Along with his four children, Kathy Slater (Darrell), Kalan Oberman (Vickie), Frank Oberman (D’Ann), Sharon Bradley (Roy), nine grandchildren & 15 great-grandchildren, Five stepchildren, Judy Black, Jo Wiley (Claude), Janna Cyr (Brian), Jeanette Myer, John Hundley (Debbie). 13 step-grandchildren & 23 step-great-grandchildren, his Brother Myran Oberman (Carolyn), Sister-in-law Doris Adair, and many nieces and nephews.
